New York City 324 199x300 POSITINE PARENTING: WHAT IS SUCCESS?Congratulations to the  New York Yankees for winning the World Series.  I would also like to congratulate the Philadelphia Phillies for coming in second.

The sports experts will be able to recall everything that happened in this game.  Who pitched. Who got the big hits. Everything.  The rest of us will only remember who won. Last year it was the Phillies who won it all. Does this mean that last year they were successful and this year they are failures.   There must be a better way to measure success.

I teach my kids that success is a process.  There is no one deciding event that will make one successful.  There are a series of events that  are not finalized in the 1st, 6th, or 12th grades.

Let’s take these baseball players.  They didn’t wake up one morning and decide” Today, we’re going to play in the big game”.  No.  It took a whole season of hard work and sacrifice to get there.  Our season is our life.

What I show my kids is that everyday they must strive to be the best they can be. This means that they must work hard on getting good grades and be respectful.

Every kid is not going to be an A student.  What I want my kids to do is to try to determine what do they really like to do.  Is it drawing?  Is it singing? Is it teaching?  Is it writing?  What ever it is, I want them to begin working on developing these talents. They may not want to be doctors or lawyers but as a positive parent, I want to encourage their creativity.  I feel that my kid’s success will be determined by them following their heart.

These athletes love what they are doing( despite the big salaries).  How often have we met someone who has been in a job for 20 years and is miserable?    My kids must learn how to defeat being miserable.  Life is too short.

I want my kids to enjoy life.

I LOVE BEING A DAD!
